1938 Yugoslavia 20 & 50 Dinara of Peter II 2-pc Set Circulated
The Child King Who Saved the World
Peter II, only 17 when he was proclaimed King of Yugoslavia, refused to capitulate to Adolf Hitler and his Nazi sycophants, prompting a German invasion that resulted in the country being forced to surrender. But, and this is a big but, that invasion forced a six-week delay in Germany’s planned invasion of Russia, Operation Barbarossa, which led to Germany’s defeat at the hands of the Russians and changed the course of what seemed an inevitable German victory.
The Boy Who Defied der Führer
Now you can pay tribute to the “Boy King” who had the courage and conviction to defy der Führer with this two-piece set of 20 Dinara and 50 Dinara coins. Each was struck in 75% fine silver and together they represent the first and only coins to bear the portrait of King Peter II. Peter’s reign did not survive the war. Ruling in exile, he was formerly deposed in 1944 by Marshal Tito in a bloodless change of power that Peter himself encouraged all Yugoslavs to accept.
What If…?
Historians have long wondered what would have happened had Hitler launched his planned invasion of the Soviet Union when he originally planned. The six-week delay pushed back the offensive to June 22 instead of the preferred spring launch. The Nazis had the Red Army on the ropes until a brutal Russian Winter literally stalled Germany’s Wehrmacht in its tracks as tank treads froze and slowed the advance to a crawl. By December, Soviet counter attacks had turned the tide even as German troops were within sight of Moscow.
