The Second World War was the Most Destructive War in History. After years of appeasement by his European neighbors, Nazi Germany’s mercurial dictator Adolf Hitler unleashed his war machine into Poland on September 1, 1939. Two years later, Germany attacked the Soviet Union, its one-time ally and partner in carving up Poland. Then, on December 7, 1941, Imperial Japan attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, dragging America into the conflict. By the end of the war, much of Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa, lay in ruins. Combat and bombing had flattened whole cities and towns, and destroyed bridges and railroads scorched the countryside. The war inflicted a staggering toll in human lives with deaths directly caused by the war—including military and civilian fatalities—estimated at being somewhere close to 56 million, with additional deaths from war-related disease and famine estimated at somewhere between 19 to 28 million.
