History Of Navigation Series Honors Spain’s Long-Serving Submarine

Modern navigation owes a debt of gratitude to the ancient scientists and adventurers who used their knowledge of celestial bodies to chart oceans and new lands. As these fearless mariners embarked on voyages across the world, they not only advanced navigational techniques, but advanced civilization. Now you can witness the History of Navigation thanks to a specular series of coins released by the world-renowned Real Casa de la Moneda—the Royal Mint of Spain!

Spain’s Battle-Tested Torpedo Boat

Each selectively colorized legal-tender cupro-nickel (CuNi) 1½ Euro coin in the series depicts a seagoing vessel that played an important role in the History of Navigation. Here you can secure the 2019 €1.5 History of Navigation – Submarine Galerna. Though Spain is not recognized around the world for its submarine fleet, it can claim ownership of the first electric-powered submarine, the Peral Submarine designed by Isaac Peral y Caballero (1851–1895) which was launched in 1888. Nearly a century later, the Spanish submarine Galerna (named after a galerna, a sudden and violent storm that common occurs off Spain’s Northern coast) was launched in 1981. Since then, she has had taken part in several international and NATO exercises, including being part of 2001’s Operation Active Endeavour in which she monitored possible illegal and terrorist activities in the Mediterranean.
