Hugh Hefner Didn’t Have Anything On This Spanish Teenager!

When it comes to members of royalty with roving eyes, there’s no shortage of rascals, rogues, and scoundrels. And near the top of the list sits Spanish King Alfonso XIII (1886–1941). Known as “The Playboy King,” Alfonso fathered seven children with his wife, Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, who was the youngest granddaughter of Great Britain’s Queen Victoria. He also had a host of illegitimate children through his many extramarital affairs, including one by a French aristocrat, one by his children’s governess, and two more by Spanish actress Carmen Ruiz Moragas. Rumors that he commissioned as many as 70 silent pornographic films through an intermediary were confirmed after he fled the country in 1931 and once General Francisco Franco took power in 1939 following his victory in the Spanish Civil War.

The Life Of The Spanish King Played Out On Silver Coins

The life of this womanizing lothario can be seen through the coins issued during his reign, of which this coin is one. Issued between 1896 and 1899, this 5 Pesetas silver coin shows the king as a young adolescent and has since been nicknamed the “Teenager Coin.” An earlier coin issued in 1888 depicted Alfonso as a toddler. Until he was dethroned in 1931, Alfonso never knew what it was like to NOT be king. That’s because he was king even before he was born following the death of his father while his mother was three-month’s pregnant with him. Alfonso’s mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as regent until he assumed full powers on his sixteenth birthday in 1902.

Similar In Silver Content To A Morgan Silver Dollar

The story of Alfonso XIII’s life is fascinating enough, but what also make this coin so unique is its large silver content. The easiest contemporary coin to compare it to would be the U.S. Morgan Silver Dollar. While the Morgan Silver Dollar was struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, these Silver Teenager Coins were only slightly smaller, struck in 25 grams of 90% silver. Plus, each coin available here comes in nice Fine to Very Fine (F–VF) condition. Availability is limited, so act fast!
