1869–1870 Spain 5 Pesetas Seated Liberty Silver F–VF
Found! Reclining Hispania 5 Pesetas
The peseta is a long-running denomination that circulated in Spain between 1868 and 2002. These silver 5 Pesetas coins were part of a two-year only issue struck at the beginning of that run by a provisional government after the overthrow of Queen Isabella II in 1868, and before the inauguration of King Amadeo in 1871. You might yawn and say, “So what?” but here’s where you’d be missing out:
Striking Similarity Between Spain’s Reclining Hispania And America’s Seated Liberty
One of the big reasons this coin is popular both in Europe and here in the United States is the obverse design. Sharp-eyed coin collectors will immediately spot the striking similarity between this design of a Reclining Hispania with that of the Seated Liberty design that appeared on most regular-issue United States silver coinage struck from 1836 through 1891. The American coins, as designed by Christian Gobrecht, the U.S. Mint’s 3rd Chief Engraver, depicted Lady Liberty clad in a flowing dress and seated upon a rock.
Struck in 25 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, these coins are nearly the same size and weight of the Morgan Silver Dollar that was first struck only a few years after these coins first appeared. We tracked down a limited quantity of these coins in Germany and found a small cache of these marvelous coins in Fine to Very Fine (F–VF) condition. The “Sister” to America’s own Seated Liberty coinage, secure one of these coins now before they’re gone!
