A Brief History of Coca-Cola™
The first-ever Coca-Cola was poured on May 8, 1886, in downtown Atlanta. Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a local pharmacist, made the syrup for Coca-Cola and took it to Jacobs’ Pharmacy down the street, where it was sold for five cents a glass. The combination of Pemberton’s syrup with carbonated water made for a soda that was both “Delicious and Refreshing,” which has remained the hallmark of Coke products to this day. Dr. Pemberton sold most portions of the business in the years that followed and finally sold his remaining interest just before he died in 1888.
Coca-Cola made its global footprint during World War II when the company’s president, Robert Woodruff, made an effort to ensure that every American serviceman and woman could have a bottle of Coke wherever they were stationed in the world, no matter the cost to the company. Woodruff’s vision cemented Coca-Cola as a global entity, reaching a slew of new international markets.
