The Crazy Origins Of Harley Quinn

Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for Batman: The Animated Series, Harley was an immediate hit after her first appearance on September 11, 1992 when she was depicted as a henchwoman for the Joker. She soon became a central character in DC Comics with a wild origin story: Though seemingly ditsy, Harley was actually a gifted psychiatrist—Dr. Harleen Quinzel—who worked at Arkham Asylum where she encountered the Joker and, while attempting to treat the psychotic madman, succumbed to his insane ravings. Harley helps the Joker escape from Arkham, and he rewards her by pushing her into a vat of chemicals, which bleaches her skin and drives her insane, resulting in her transformation to Harley Quinn. In the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films, she has been portrayed by actress Margot Robbie three times—2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Pop superstar Lady Gaga will portray Harley in Joker: Folie à Deux set to debut on October 4, 2024.
