2022 Niue $2 1-oz Silver Jolly Roger – Calico Jack BU
“Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life For Me!”
“Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.”
So goes the most famous pirate poem in all of literature as taken from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale Treasure Island published in 1883. And thanks to Errol Fynn’s swashbuckler films of the 1930s and ’40s and Disney’s blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean movies, those who enjoy the romance and adventure on the high seas know all about pirate lore… or do they? Now you can get a crash course with this coin, the first release in the Jolly Roger series dedicated to famous pirate flags that have flown throughout history!
Captain Jack’s Iconic Skull And Crossbones
The first release couldn’t have been a better choice. It shows the iconic skull and crossbones flown by Captain John Rackham, better known as the infamous “Calico Jack,” whose short pirate career is noted for two things: The creation of the famous pirate flag and the fact that he had two women serving alongside his crew of buccaneers. Set against a wavy background, the image of Calico Jack’s crossed swords below a grinning skull shines on this coin struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.99% silver.
The Pirate Life Of Calico Jack
Not much is known about Calico Jack’s early life other than that he was of English descent and hooked up with a pirate crew ravaging the Spanish Main sometime in the early 1700s. Eventually he led a mutiny and took control of a pirate ship before turning himself in for a King’s Pardon in 1719. Evidently the pirate life really WAS for him, because only a few months after being paroled he seduced a married women named Anne Bonny. When her husband found out, the couple fled, but not before stealing a ship and assembling a pirate crew that also included another woman, Mary Read. Within a few short months they were apprehended. Jack was hanged in 1720 while Read and Bonny both escaped the hangman’s noose by claiming they were pregnant. Mary died in prison during childbirth. No one is sure what happened to Anne. Some say she escaped to South Carolina and died of old age in 1782.
