2024 Netherlands 1-oz Gold Ducaton Proof
Hi-Yo Silver! The Dutch Ducaton Rides Again!
Long before the Lone Ranger patrolled the wild West astride Silver, his spirited white horse, the Netherlands, or at least is economic interests—were defended by the “Silver Rider,” a dynamic trade coin that helped the Dutch compete against well-known world coins such as the Spanish dollar. Known as the “Ducaton,” the Silver Rider was a beloved trade coin minted from 1659 to 1798 by the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Now the Silver Rider makes its triumphant return on this official restrike by the Royal Dutch Mint that was based on an original 17th Century Ducaton. Perhaps THIS version should be called the “Golden Rider,” however, since it’s been struck in gleaming pure gold!
Exquisite Details Pays Tribute To The Famous Silver Rider
The obverse shows a heavily armored knight riding his trusty steed while brandishing a sword high above his head. An inscription along the rim reads “MO:NO:ARG:CON FOE:BELG:PRO:TRAI.” which translates to “New Silver coin of the Dutch Republic Province of Utrech.” The reverse of this fabulous restrike shows a pair of lions holding up the crowned Coat of Arms for the United Netherlands along with the lettering “CONCORDIA. RES PARVAE CRESCVNT,” which translates to “Concordance makes small things grow." The detail on this commemorative is so exquisite that you can see every rivet in the knight’s armor on the obverse. Turn the piece over and check out the lion featured as the center of the Coat of Arms and you’ll see that it’s holding a sheaf of arrows, symbolizing the unity of the provinces, and brandishing a sword in defense of their liberty!
