The Netherland’s Golden Tribute to a Youthful Queen

Princess Wilhelmina Helena Pailing Marie of the Netherlands was born on August 31, 1880. As the last surviving heir of the 400-year Orange-Nassau line, she was allowed to take power as queen upon the repeal of a law forbidding female rulers. She went on to rule for 58 years — longer than any other Dutch monarch. Queen Wilhelmina was influential in both World Wars, maintaining neutrality during the First and serving as a symbol of strength and unity for Dutch resistance fighters during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II.

In 1897, Queen Wilhelmina had yet to be sworn in and inaugurated. But while her mother Emma was serving as Regent, Wilhelmina was still the nation’s queen, and so this one-year-only 1897 Dutch Gold 10 Guilder features the 17-year-old’s youthful portrait on the obverse, with the royal arms of the Kingdom of The Netherlands on the reverse.

This fabulous coin has not only managed to make it unscathed through only 120 years of turbulent history but has survived through today in stunning Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. We’ve never seen an example of this coin in that nice of condition. In fact, most specimens are found today in Extremely Fine (XF) condition or lower, making this a truly magnificent find.
