1982–1984 Mexico 50 Pesos CuNi Coyolxāuhqui
Honoring Mexico’s Distant Past
Struck from 1982 to 1984, this stunning Mexican 50 Pesos commemorative coin features a design based on a carved artifact uncovered in Mexico City in 1978—an Aztec stone disc featuring Coyolxāuhqui, daughter of the Earth goddess Cōātlīcue. According to Aztec mythology, Coyolxāuhqui was the Moon goddess and her name means “Golden Bells.” She was defeated in a revolt she led against her mother and in the aftermath her head was cut off and flung into the sky where it became the moon.
Iconic Design Reflects Central America’s Rich Heritage
Struck by the Mexico City Mint in 19.85 grams of copper-nickel (CuNi), this coin features iconic designs that demonstrate the rich heritage of Central America. The image of Coyolxāuhqui represents Mexico City’s past, and the powerful eagle on the reverse demonstrates the strength of modern Mexico. Each coin will arrive in a coin folio which provides context for the coin and shows an image of what the original artifact would have looked like in full color. Secure yours now! Date our choice.
