Silver Coins Of The Last Aztec Emperor
The Aztec Empire was formed out of three city-states in the Valley of Mexico in the 1420s and reigned supreme for a century until Spanish Conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés arrived and toppled the empire in 1521. The unenviable role of being the last Aztec Emperor fell to Cuauhtémoc, a 25-year-old cousin of the late emperor Montezuma II. Following the massacre of many nobles who were attending a sacrificial rite in the Great Temple in the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan, Cuauhtémoc was one of the few leaders left to confront the Spanish invaders. The timing of his ascension to the throne couldn’t have come at a worse time. The empire was besieged by Spanish invaders on one side and ravaged by smallpox on the other. After Cuauhtémoc surrendered, Cortés feared he would lead a revolt and later had the young king hanged to squash any thoughts of rebellion against Spanish rule.
After 400 Years, King Cuauhtémoc Finally Gets Recognition
In 1947 and 1948, more than 400 years after the Conquistadors put Cuauhtémoc to death, Mexico honored the last Aztec Emperor by striking a legal-tender coin in 27 grams of highly pure 90% fine Mexican silver. This beautiful coin struck by the Mexico City Mint pays tribute to the young king with a remarkable design reminiscent of Mesoamerican artwork from the age of Cuauhtémoc and the Aztec empire. At 40 mm in diameter, it’s also nearly the size of an American Silver Eagle! Plus, this 5 Pesos coin also comes in nice Extremely Fine (XF) condition so you can see every detail of the young Aztec king’s face and royal headgear.
