Grace Kelly’s Husband Is On This Coin

The Monaco 5 Francs Coin with the Prince Rainier III effigy was struck in silver only twice, in 1960 and 1966. He was the Prince of Monaco from 1949 to 2005, reigning for nearly 56 years—making him one of the longest ruling monarchs in European history. He was also known for being the husband of one of America’s leading ladies in movies during the early to mid-1950s, Grace Kelly.

A Romance Fit For A Hollywood Script

The couple met in 1955 during a photoshoot at the Prince’s Palace, a medieval Genoese fortress that serves as the official royal residence. The meeting was arranged to support the beautiful Hollywood starlet’s trip to the Cannes Film Festival. Completely smitten with each other, they married in 1956 after a year-long courtship that culminated in what was billed as the “Wedding of the Century,” eclipsing even Princess Elizabeth’s wedding that had taken place in Great Britain less than a decade earlier. Fresh off winning the 1955 Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in 1954’s The Country Girl, the 26-year-old Kelly retired from Hollywood and devoted the rest of her life to her husband, children, and philanthropic causes. She died in 1982 after suffering a mild cerebral hemorrhage while driving and plunged off a steep cliff. Devastated, Rainier never re-married and was buried by her side following his own death more than two decades later.

In this offer you will receive a silver coin dated 1960 or 1966 in Extremely Fine (XF) condition. About the size of U.S. Half Dollar, these coins were struck in 12 grams of 83.5% fine silver and measure 29 mm in diameter. The reverse design shows Monaco’s crowned arms with supporters flanked by the coin’s denomination. Mintages for both years were only 125,000 and quantities are limited, so act now! Date our choice.
