Tribute To General Douglas MacArthur
A controversial American hero, General Douglas MacArthur finished first in his class at the United State Military Academy at West Point, was nominated for a Medal of Honor during World War I, became a national hero for his defense of the Philippines, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was a 5-star general by the end of World War II. He was also removed from his command by President Harry Truman during the Korean War. Upon his return to the United States in 1951, he gave a farewell address to Congress in which he famously said, “Old soldiers never die, they just… fade away.” But MacArthur was wrong about one thing, his memory has never faded away. And, as the medal clearly shows, he remans ever still, an American hero and military legend.
Familiar And Iconic Images Of General Douglas MacArthur
Though not a legal-tender coin, this impressive medal was struck by the renowned Intaglio Mint in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. The obverse features a portrait of MacArthur dressed in his familiar khaki uniform and leather jacket with his signature wheel hat and distinctive Missouri-made corn cob pipe with which he was known to use as a pointer. His name, GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR, is engraved along the top rim of the medal while across the bottom his birth and death dates — January 26, 1880 – April 5, 1964 — are shown.
The medal’s reverse shows MacArthur in one of the most exciting moments of his career as he’s depicted wading ashore on October 20, 1944, during the initial landings at Leyte, Philippines during World War II. MacArthur had famously said, “I shall return!” in early 1942 after he was ordered by President Franklin Roosevelt to leave the Philippines lest he be captured by invading Japanese forces. Above the image of MacArthur and a few of his subordinates is a quote from the general that reads, “In War There is No Substitute for Victory.”
