Intaglio Mint 1-oz Silver Public Enemy #1: Al Capone Medal Gem BU
Scarface Al Is Number One Again On the Intaglio Mint’s Public Enemy #1 Series
Perhaps the most famous gangster to ever live was none other than Alphonse “Al” Capone. Known by many as “Scarface,” the Brooklyn-born gangster dominated Chicago’s criminal underworld during a seven-year reign during the Roaring ’20s and the early Depression-era ’30s. And now, the attention-loving mobster has been immortalized in its pure silver by the Intaglio Mint in the first release of its Public Enemy #1 series!
Al Capone: Public Enemy No. #1
This medal depicts Big Al chomping on a cigar below an inscription that reads PUBLIC ENEMY #1. A facsimile of his signature can be seen at the bottom of the design. Capone was declared Public Enemy #1 by newspapers and influential citizens following the brutal murder of seven rival gang members that occurred in broad daylight on Saint Valentine’s Day in 1929. The reverse design shows Capone brandishing a tommy gun in the foreground while a bustling street scene in front of the famed famous Chicago Theatre, the headquarters for Capone’s criminal empire, towers in the background.
Gem Uncirculated, Highly Pure Silver Medal
Though not legal tender, this silver round was struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. Pus, each medal available here comes in gorgeous Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, meaning that this gleaming medal is the product of a superb strike that places it firmly among the elite of the run!
Enter the Untouchables
Capone was finally put away by the Untouchables — an elite squad of Prohibition Bureau agents led by Eliot Ness that were considered to be incorruptible. Though he was never convicted of murder, bootlegging, racketeering or any other number of crimes associated with organized crime, Capone was convicted on five count of tax evasion and was sent to the famous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary off the coast of San Francisco. Ravaged by syphilis, he was a shell of himself when he was released and spent his final years in Miami Beach living in retirement.
