A Tribute to the Pan-American Expo

At the start of the 20th century, Buffalo, New York played host to the Pan-American Exposition. Taking place shortly after the end of the Spanish-American War, the Expo was a chance to look to the future and celebrate the camaraderie of the nations located in North, Central, and South America. Unfortunately, the event is mainly remembered as the site of President William McKinley’s assassination. But before that tragic event, medalist Heron Atkind MacNeil created the design used for prize medals. It featured an obverse of Liberty walking beside a Bison, while the reverse displays two Native Americans, one each representing the continents of North and South America, sharing a peace pipe. This two-ounce, 99.9% fine silver medal recreates that design as a tribute to its inspiring message of unity.
