Hyderabad, under British colonial rule of India, was known for its riches and prestige, including the world-famous Golconda diamond mines. As far back as the Roman Empire the fabulous diamonds from the Golconda diamond mines appeared as jewelry worn by Rome’s wealthiest women. Known as the City of Pearls, Hyderabad was once the global center for large diamonds, emeralds, and natural pearls. After the Fall of the Roman Empire the flow of diamonds headed west to Europe seemingly dried up only to be reborn as the Silk Road was reinvigorated in medieval times. The Golconda mine was still among the world’s most profitable during the Victorian Era when Great Britain took direct control of India in 1858, a rule that would last for nearly a century!

Struck During The Height Of British Rule Over India

Struck during the reign of George V, the king of the United Kingdom, the British Dominions, and Emperor of India; this century-old 1 Rupee coin offers a glimpse of the British Raj at a time when England introduced railroads and cricket to the Indian population while dominating the country through a combination of military, economic, and social measures. It was minted between 1911 and 1925, with a stunning design that features traditional calligraphy and the Charminar building, a landmark built in 1591 with a mosque on its top floor, and known for the popular, busy markets surrounding it.
