Athenian Owl Tetradrachms – The Silver Dollar of the Ancient World!
One of the earliest coins to be struck with both an obverse and a reverse design, these Greek City-State of Athens Silver Tetradrachms date circa 393-294 B.C. and feature Athena on the obverse and an owl on the reverse. These are thick, heavy, high-relief coins that are perhaps the most widely recognized ancient coin today.
The Athenian Owl Silver Tetradrachm was the first coin to be heavily circulated internationally. It’s not a stretch to say that this 2,300-year-old coin was the “Silver Dollar” of its day – it was a big silver coin that was recognized and accepted as payment everywhere. It features Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, and an owl, a symbol of the city. These historic coins have each been certified, graded and encapsulated by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be in Choice Extremely Fine (CH XF) condition.
