2023 Great Britain £100 1-oz Gold Royal Arms Coin BU
A Heraldic Journey Through English History
With a history dating back to King Richard the Lionheart more than 800 years ago, the United Kingdom’s Royal Arms are rich with all the pomp and pageantry one would expect from a monarchy that has brought us such famous rulers as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Victoria, Elizabeth II, and now, King Charles III.
Popular Bullion Series From Great Britain’s Royal Mint
It’s no wonder that The Royal Mint selected the British monarchy’s historic and symbolic Royal Coat of Arms as the theme for a bullion series of coins. 2023 marks the fifth year of the series and each coin is a testament to the popularity and rich tradition that is symbolized by the Royal Family and its centuries-old crests, symbols and insignia that together are nothing short of a heraldic journey through English history. This year’s issue is also to the first to feature the new portrait of King Charles III created by British artist Martin Jennings.
The King’s Official Coat Of Arms
Struck in one ounce of 99.99% pure gold, these legal-tender £100 (one hundred pounds) coins boldly display the Royal Arms—the official Royal Coat of Arms as designed by esteemed heraldic artist Timothy Noad. The coin’s design features a quartered shield bearing the three lions of England, the rampant lion of Scotland and the harp of Ireland. The shield is surmounted by the Royal Crown and supported by a crowned English Lion on one side and the Scottish Unicorn, held firmly in chains, on the other side.
Surrounding the shield is the inscription “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”—the motto of the Order of the Garter, which translates to “shame on him who thinks evil of it.” Below it appears the motto of the Sovereign, “DIEU ET MON DROIT,” which translates to “God and my right.” Below is a rose, thistle, and shamrock, representing England, Scotland, and Ireland, respectively. This contemporary version is unusual in that it also includes the leek of Wales, an onion-like root vegetable that has been worn by royal guards on Saint David’s Day since the days of the Tudor dynasty in honor of the patron saint of Wales.
