Take Home The White Greyhound Of Richmond

When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II received her crown on June 2, 1953, ten symbolic creatures, each representing a part of her centuries-long royal lineage, stood guard outside the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. One of those six-foot-tall sculptures standing in silent deference was the White Greyhound of Richmond, an honorable creature that is also a part of the Royal Mint’s Queen’s Beasts series.

A Design Based In British Royalty

The ninth release in the popular series, this White Greyhound of Richmond coin bears a legal-tender denomination of £10 (ten pounds) and is struck in ten full ounces of highly pure 99.99% silver. The symbolic coin depicts the popular canine over a Tudor Rose Shield. The shield’s badge, or “livery,” shows a Tudor Rose below a Royal Crown.

The White Greyhound of Richmond dates back to the reign of King Henry VII, who seized the throne from Richard III after the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 that ended the War of the Roses between the Houses of Lancaster and York. He reigned as the first monarch from the House of Tudor until his death in 1509. Greyhounds were often used by Henry on his standards thanks to his father, Edmund Tudor, the Earl of Richmond. Greyhounds were a popular dog breed in Northern England and represented honor. Edmond used greyhound images for his own symbols. When Henry came to power, he used the White Greyhound along with a rose that featured red and white elements of Lancaster and York to emphasize the union of the rival houses.
