2021 Great Britain £5 28.28-gm Silver Alfred the Great Proof
This Coin Will Make a “Great” Addition To Your Collection
During his long 28-year reign from 871 to 899, England’s King Alfred the Great protected his land from Viking invasion, emphasized education among his subjects, and had monks translate books from Latin into English and circulated the books throughout his realm so that people could read those bound tomes in their native tongue. He also famously established a mint in London, then known as Lvndonia, where the Monogram Penny featuring a crude portrait of Alfred was struck making it one of the first coins produced at what would ultimately become Great Britain’s Royal Mint. And now the Royal Mint is celebrating this great king with a silver coin that pays tribute to the legacy of the one-and-only Alfred the Great.
A Modern Coin Inspired by a Medieval Jewel
Struck 1,150 years after Alfred’s accession to the throne, these £5 legal tender coins feature an image of the 9th Century monarch designed by sculptor John Bergdahl. The design was inspired by the precious Alfred Jewel a priceless Anglo-Saxon relic inscribed with the words, “ÆFLRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN,” which translates to “Alfred ordered me to be made.” One of the most celebrated objects surviving from Anglo-Saxon England, it was discovered in 1693 at North Petherton, a short distance from Alfred’s fortified monastery at Athelney, in Somerset. In addition to the portrait of Alfred the Great, the medieval-styled coin also features special “punch” lettering such as that used during Alfred the Great’s reign. Inscribed are the words “ALFRED THE GREAT,” and the dual dates of 877 and 2021.
