In 1951, Great Britain held The Festival of Britain, a national exhibition commemorating the centenary of the Great Exhibition of 1851. The festival was a welcome event for the nation after suffering through years of war and austerity, promoted British achievements in science, technology, industry, architecture, and the arts at venues in London and across the country. As part of the celebration, the Royal Mint issued a special 5 Shillings Crown coin for King George VI struck in copper-nickel (CuNi), only the second crown struck for King George VI by Great Britain!

A Popular King, An Iconic Design, And A Century Of Innovation

The portrait of George VI is featured on the obverse while the coin’s reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous Saint George slaying the dragon design that was first used on the British Gold Sovereign in 1817. Another interesting design feature of the coin is incuse edge lettering that reads, “MDCCCLI CIVIUM INDUSTRIA FLORET CIVITAS MCMLI,” which translates to “1851 By the industry of its people the state flourishes 1951.”
