Historic Third Reich Silver Coins

These historic Third Reich 5 Reichsmark Two-Coin Sets are from a limited hoard recently discovered in Germany. The set features a 1934-1935 Potsdam Church and a 1935-1936 Hindenburg, two coins with big backstories.

  • Originally, the Potsdam Church Coin was intended to be released in 1934 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Potsdam Garrison Church, an impressive structure built during the reign of Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I in the 1730s. The plans for the coin had been in the works long before Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party assumed control over Germany. But, by the time the coin was finally minted, the Nazis had been in power for almost a year. Never one to miss a chance to spread Nazi ideologue, Hitler turned the coin into a first anniversary celebration of Nazi rule.
  • President Paul von Hindenburg, despite being opposed to Hitler and the Nazi party, nevertheless figured prominently in the dictator’s rise to power. That’s because when Hitler and his thugs rose to power in 1933, they immediately set out to galvanize public support by using popular figureheads like Paul von Hindenburg and powerful images such as the German Eagle and Nazi swastika on public buildings and in newspapers. Hitler’s propaganda network also placed Nazi imagery on the money like this Hindenburg Coin struck in 1935 and 1936 that was used by Germans every day.

Both coins feature the Imperial Eagle on the reverse and were struck in 13.88 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver. In addition, each piece comes in About Uncirculated to Uncirculated condition. That’s significant because after Nazi Germany was defeated by the Allies in 1945, anything bearing symbols of the vanquished “Thousand-Year Reich” was confiscated and destroyed. What few silver Reichsmarks survived are now scarce relics of World War II. These sets won’t last, so don’t wait to secure yours.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • BICENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY CORRUPTED BY THE NAZIS – This Potsdam coin was intended to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Potsdam Garrison Church, but the date also marked the one-year anniversary of the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. So, when it was struck the obverse included a pair of swastikas along with a German Eagle.
  • A NAZI TRIBUTE TO ONE OF GERMANY’S FINEST – The Hindenburg coin features a portrait of Paul von Hindenburg, the man, who despite disliking Adolf Hitler, made him Chancellor of Germany, thus enabling the Nazis to seize power. The coin’s reverse features the Nazi Swastika in a wreath held aloft by an eagle.
  • STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – Each coin in this two-piece set was struck in 13.8 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver and measures 29 mm in diameter.
  • NAZI LEGAL TENDER – These commemoratives were 5 Reichsmark legal tender in Nazi Germany — the largest denomination silver coins struck by the Third Reich.
  • NICE COLLECTOR GRADE – The coins in your 1934–1936 German 5 Reichsmark Silver Hindenburg & Potsdam Two-Piece Set will come in About Uncirculated (AU) to Uncirculated (Unc) condition — remarkable grades because following the end of World War II attempts were made to destroy anything displaying Nazi imagery.
