1942 Germany 1000 Reichsmarks War Bond AU
War Bonds Issued By Nazi Germany To Fund Its War Against America
Waging war is an expensive proposition for any nation, and to fund them governments throughout time have borrowed money to fight them. But it wasn’t until the 20th century—the age of advertising—that governments began using war as a marketing tool to promote the sale of government bonds to their citizens. This was especially true for Germany during World War II when it found itself fighting on two fronts. To pay for men, material, and other expenses, Adolf Hitler and his Nazi government began issuing war bonds.
War Bonds That Fueled Hitler’s War Against America
Here is an example of Hitler’s war-making scheme. It’s a 1,000 Reichsmark bond which was sold in 1942 to raise money to fight the United States. Germany had declared war on America on December 11, 1941—just 3 days after the U.S. had declared war on Japan for its sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. By late 1942, U.S. soldiers were actively campaigning against German troops in North Africa as part of Operation Torch that paved the way to Germany’s ultimate retreat from Africa and the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943.
Large Bonds In About Uncirculated Condition
Bonds like this were confiscated and destroyed after World War II, leaving few for today’s collectors. But not only is this a genuine 80-year-old artifact from the Second World War, but it comes in nice, About Uncirculated (AU) condition. It’s also a large piece measuring approximately 10" x 8¼" with an ornate border. After their seizure by the modern German government, the swastika on these bonds was removed with a hole puncher… but they could not remove the swastika embedded in the printing on the 1,000 Reichsmark bond itself! And technically speaking, if the hole hadn’t been punched, these bonds would not be “canceled” and therefore still valid—though getting today’s German government to pay out on these notes now would be nearly impossible!
