2024 Germania Mint 1-oz Silver Valkyries Solveig Medal BU
Ride To Victory With The Nordic Sun Goddess
According to Norse mythology, the Valkyries were Germanic goddesses who carried the souls of the bravest Viking warriors killed in battle to Valhalla. These warrior women have returned—but not to accompany your soul to Odin’s vast hall where only the souls of the brave may rest in peace, but on a series of silver medals from the prestigious Germania Mint. And here on this artfully struck piece, Solveig the Norse Sun Goddess makes her triumphant appearance on the third release in the series.
The Strength & Beauty Of Solveig
Solveig is depicted in all her feminine glory clad in a form-fitting leather skirt and straps that wrap around the curves of her body. Lest you think she is one of those “helpless” females from your childhood fairy tells, look closely and you’ll see that she is wearing iron epaulettes, bracelets, and armed with an ominous-looking axe that has undoubtedly tasted battle. Amid the forested background she is accompanied by a pair of bears. According to Norse mythology, bears symbolize wisdom, strength, and healing that bring balance to the world. While male bears (boars) usually represent masculinity, female bears (sows) serve as symbols of femininity. The medal’s reverse is a combination of the Germania Mint’s double-headed eagle crest, Germanic runes, and a snarling bear in a design meant to resemble a shield.
Thousands of years before the Latin alphabet was introduced in Northern Europe, the Runic alphabet was used to write Germanic languages. Solveig’s name is spelled on this medal with a style that resembles this ancient script. You can see an actual Sowilō rune (ᛋ) representing the sun strapped around Solveig’s waist. Solveig’s name is derived from Old Norse mythology and its literal translation means “Sun Strength.” Not content to only prowl across blood-soaked battlefields in search of worthy Vikings, Solveig is said to appear every day in the Heavens as her two horses, Arvak and Alsvid, pull her chariot across the sky. During these journeys she is constantly pursued by Sköll, a ravenous wolf. An eclipse occurs when he almost catches her. It was not until the final days of the Norse gods during Ragnarök that Sköll catches and devours the sun.

A Female Force To Be Reckoned With
Similar to Biblical Angels, the Valkyries were a powerful female force to be reckoned with. The Old Norse Poems provide a list of Valkyrie names who were known as the fiercest warriors in battle. No less than 39 named Valkyries exist, each with a different meaning! Their origin story explains that they are beautiful virgin warriors and the daughters of Odin. “Valkyrie” means “chooser of the slain,” and those chosen by these Nordic Battle Angels will fight beside Odin at Ragnarök—the Twilight of the Gods. The foreboders of war, Valkyries are a sign of female power and prestige and represents the Norse way of life.
