King George VI & Queen Elizabeth II Father-Daughter Crown Two-Piece Set

Queen Elizabeth II adored her father, King George VI, and at only 25 years of age, learned of his passing while she was on a trip to Kenya on her father’s behalf. She was overcome with absolute grief. Here you have the silver 1937 King George VI Crown. Included in this set is a Coronation issue for the ascension to the throne of the new King that took place on May 12, 1937, and the copper 1953 Coronation Crown that celebrated Elizabeth II’s new status as the Queen.

Honoring The Coronation Of King George VI

Long before Great Britain’s recent “Megxit” drama played out before a public eager for all the salacious details about Prince Harry and his wife Megan Markle and their rift with the Royal Family, the London tabloids were filled with equally juicy morsels related to King Edward VIII’s abdication of the throne in 1936 to wed twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. The 1937 Crown coin was issued at the beginning of George VI’s reign to honor his coronation. Since Edward abdicated in December of 1936 before his official coronation, all the plans for a coronation ceremony were still in place. Instead of Edward being crowned king on May 12, 1937, however, it was younger brother George who held the Sovereign’s Scepter and Orb and had Saint Edward’s Crown placed on his head. This impressive coin was beautifully struck by Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint in 50% fine silver.

1953 Crown Honored The Coronation Of Queen Elizabeth II

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the longest-serving female head of state in world history, and the world’s oldest living monarch when she passed away on September 8, 2022, at age 96. The 1953 Crown coin’s obverse features a majestic design of the Queen on horseback while the reverse shows a crown at the center of a cross formed by a rose, shamrock, leek, and thistle—symbols of the United kingdom. The rose represents England, the shamrock represents Ireland, the leek represents Wales, and the thistle represents Scotland. It also features unique edge lettering with the words, “FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU,” a sentiment voiced years earlier by Elizabeth in 1947 while still a princess when she said: “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”
