120-Year-Old British Victoria Pennies
These beautiful and instantly recognizable bronze pennies were struck more than 120 years ago during the era when Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland. During this “Victorian Age,” London was the home of Sherlock Holmes, Charles Dickens, and the capital of an empire on which “the sun never set.” These bronze Victoria Pennies are dated between 1895-1901 (date our choice) and are the only British pennies to feature the unmistakable portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a veil on the obverse. The reverse has a splendid design showing Britannia, the allegorical symbol of Great Britain, seated with trident and shield.
A Period Of Mourning Inspires Poignant Design
Throughout her long 63-year reign—one of the longest reigns in European History—Victoria appeared on the nation’s coins. By the time she passed away in 1901, several different effigies of her profile adorned coins across the British Empire. This version is the third and last of these effigies. Nicknamed the “Widow Head” design, it reflects the fact that Victoria mourned the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, until the day she died. His death sent Victoria into a deep depression, and she stayed in seclusion for many years. She rarely appeared in public and dressed in black for the remaining forty years of her life.
Each coin comes in Circulated condition and will be protected in a clear round numismatic capsule and housed in a deluxe presentation case. The coin will also be accompanied by a detailed story card about the great city of London and a Certificate of Authenticity. This Great Britain Queen Victoria “Widow Head” Penny is sure to be a poignant addition to any collection. Order yours today!
