The Grandmother Of Europe In Silver
Queen Victoria, whose effigy graces this highly pure 92.5% Sterling silver Half Crown, was nicknamed the “Grandmother of Europe” because her many children had married into many of Europe’s royal families—in Prussia, Denmark, Russia and more—and her numerous grandchildren eventually did the same, and included future German Emperor Wilhelm II, the future Queen Sophie of Greece and the future czarina of Russia, Alexandra who married Czar Nicholas II.

These coins were struck at a time when Great Britain was the world’s preeminent superpower with an empire on which “The Sun Never Set” a navy that was equal to that of at least any two other countries. Queen Victoria was such a dominating personality that this period even bears her name, “The Victorian Era.” In the 1800s, silver Half Crown coins like this were roughly the equivalent of a United States 50-cent piece, leading it to be nicknamed by some as a “half dollar” in the U.S. and Canada.
