When John M. Mercanti retired as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, he had accomplished one of the most storied careers in the Mint’s history. National Symbols Of Liberty

This collaboration between Mercanti and the Paris Mint and its chief Engraver, Joaquin Jimenez, is the first time that the Paris Mint has ever collaborated with a former U.S. Mint designer. Mercanti designed the obverse “Liberty” side while Jimenez designed the reverse “Sower” side to commemorate their nation’s national symbol of Liberty on a series of limited-edition gold & silver High Relief Proofs. It should be noted that many coin experts believe that the French Sower design first struck from 1897 was the inspiration for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916.
