Vintage French Silver Hercules

Hercules is one of the most famous heroes of ancient myth and was featured on multiple coins of the ancient world. Then in 1848 he made a triumphant return to coinage as the obverse of the French Silver 5 Francs coin thanks to sculptor Augustin Dupre. This design is a favorite of vintage world coin collectors, showing the masculine demi-god standing between the allegorical figures of Liberty and Equality dressed only in his legendary lion skin.

Struck by France Between Defeats at the Hands of Germany

Struck in France during the government of the Third Republic, these 90% fine silver coins are roughly the same size as a Morgan Silver Dollar. The Third Republic came to power in 1870 towards the end of Franco-Prussian War, a French defeat that also led the creation of Imperial Germany. The Third Republic would govern France until July 10, 1940 when it was replaced by the Vichy government following Nazi Germany’s lightning victory over France in the early years of World War II
