Joan Of Arc-Approved: A Gold Coin From 15th Century France

One might forgive Charles VII if he carried a not-so-small chip on his shoulder. After all, as the 11th child and fifth son of Charles VI, he didn’t start life out in an enviable position. Things didn’t get better after his four older brothers all died. It was then that his insane father—known as “Charles the Mad,” because, among other things, he believed he was made of glass and could shatter at any moment—disinherited him and turned the throne over to England. Upon his father’s death, he was forced to flee Paris to escape the clutches of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy. Charles later negotiated a deal with John, promising him half his kingdom, only to have him brutally assassinated. Then, thanks to the intervention of Joan of Arc, he was crowned in Rheims in 1429 and successfully put an end to the Hundred Years War in 1453.
