Why Are American Gold Eagles 91% Gold?

Why Are American Gold Eagles 91% Gold?

By GovMint :

American Gold Eagles are crafted with a composition of 91.67% gold, commonly called 22-karat gold. This specific alloy ratio is not arbitrary but a deliberate choice rooted in historical and practical considerations. The grandfather of modern gold bullion coins, the Gold Krugerrand, was first struck with 91.67% fine gold. Therefore, when the U.S. Mint debuted its official gold bullion coin, the Gold Eagle, the same dimensions and gold content were adopted.

The primary reason for this 91.67% composition is durability. Pure gold, known for its softness, is susceptible to wear and tear, primarily when used in coins that might have been handled frequently. By combining gold with other metals, such as silver and copper, the resulting 22-karat gold coins achieve a harder, more durable finish, capable of withstanding the rigors of handling without significantly degrading the design or the coin itself.
