The U.S. penny features the profile of President Abraham Lincoln. This design has been in place since 1909 and is one of the longest continuous running coin designs in American history. The decision to feature Lincoln was made to commemorate the centennial of his birth, notably marking the first time a U.S. coin featured a real person's likeness.
