A "Sovereign" coin is a popular gold coin issued by The Royal Mint in Great Britain with a long history dating back over 500 years. First struck in 1489 under the reign of Henry VII,  over the centuries, the Gold Sovereign has undergone various transformations including a hiatus and revival in 1817. It was on the 1817 revival that the iconic Benedetto Pistrucci design debuted, which features St. George slaying the dragon. This classic design remains a staple of the Gold Sovereign series today.
