What Are Dimes Made Of?

Since 1965, U.S. dimes have been made of a clad copper-nickel alloy consisting of 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel. This composition replaced the previous 90% silver and 10% copper alloy, issued from 1837 to 1965, due to rising silver prices and the need for more economical coin production. Before 1837, dimes had a composition of 89% silver and 11% copper.
