What Years Are the Platinum Eagle?
American Platinum Eagle coins have been issued by the U.S. Mint since their introduction in 1997, with both bullion and proof versions released in various years up to the present. While there have been some years when certain versions were not minted, the series overall spans from 1997 to the current year, with ongoing annual releases.
For example, one tenth ounce, one quarter ounce, and one half ounce sizes were issued alongside the standard one ounce bullion and proof releases from 1997 until 2008. After 2008, fractional Platinum Eagles stopped being made, and the issuance of bullion Platinum Eagles also paused for several years. From 2009 until 2013, only one ounce Proof Platinum Eagles were issued by the U.S. Mint. However, in 2014, bullion Platinum Eagles were again issued and have been an annual release ever since. Fractional issues have yet to return to the series.
Are Platinum Coins Legal Tender?
Yes, American Platinum Eagle coins are technically legal tender in the United States, they do have a face value and are backed by the U.S. government for their weight, content, and purity. The face value of these coins, however, is largely symbolic and does not reflect their actual market value, which is typically much higher due to a variety of factors including the platinum content, and in the case of collector proof versions, condition and mintage.
