Are Kennedy Half Dollars Silver?

Are Kennedy Half Dollars Silver?

By GovMint :

The Kennedy Half Dollar has a fascinating history with regard to its silver content. From 1964 to 1965, these coins were struck with 90% silver. However, in 1965, due to the rising price of silver, the composition was changed to 40% silver and 60% copper, marking a significant shift in the material makeup of Kennedy half dollars. In 1971, the composition of the Kennedy Half Dollar again shifted to a copper-nickel alloy, losing the silver content seen in the earlier coins.

Today, Kennedy Half Dollars continue to be minted for collectors in the copper-nickel alloy, though they are not released into circulation. Modern collectors can also enjoy 99.9% fine silver Kennedy Half Dollars in the U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set releases.
