When NBC announced plans to broadcast a one-hour television show based on the life and exploits of legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone, there was no better choice for the lead role than Fess Parker. While it had been nearly a decade since the 6'5" blue-eyed actor played Davy Crockett for a series of Walt Disney adventures that aired on ABC from 1954 to 1955, the Peacock Network struck gold with Daniel Boone that ran for six years from 1964 to 1970. The Legendary Life Of Daniel Boone

What’s funny is that the REAL Daniel Boone’s life needed no embellishing. His exploits included blazing the Wilderness Road that ran from Tennessee to Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap. The road was our nation’s first migration highway and became the main thoroughfare for Americans heading west into the new promised land of Kentucky from 1775 to about 1820. In its early days the trip was not for the faint of heart. Boone’s 16-year-old son James was killed in an Indian attack along the route in 1773, his 13-year-old daughter Jemima was captured by Shawnee Indians in 1776 (Boone freed her in a daring rescue two days later), and his brother Ned was killed by Shawnee warriors while hunting with Daniel in 1780. Daniel himself was captured and held prisoner by this same tribe for four months in 1778 before he made his own daring escape.

Fess Parker was seldom seen without his flintlock rifle dubbed “Old Tick-Licker.” The real Daniel gave the durable firearm its name because he said he could use it to shoot a tick off an animal without hurting the beast! Other aspects of the series—like Ed Ames’ portrayal of Daniel’s friend Mingo, an Oxford-educated half-British, half-Cherokee—were complete fiction.
