“Daniel Boone Was A Man, A Big Man”

When NBC announced plans to broadcast a one-hour television show based on the life and exploits of legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone, there was no better choice for the lead role than Fess Parker. While it had been nearly a decade since the 6'5" blue-eyed actor played Davy Crockett for a series of Walt Disney adventures that aired on ABC from 1954 to 1955, the Peacock Network struck gold with Daniel Boone that ran for six years from 1964 to 1970. Heavy on action, the program was so loose with actual facts that the Kentucky Legislature approved a resolution to express its displeasure with the show’s historical inaccuracies!

The Legendary Life Of Daniel Boone

What’s funny is that the REAL Daniel Boone’s life needed no embellishing. His exploits included blazing the Wilderness Road that ran from Tennessee to Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap. The road was our nation’s first migration highway and became the main thoroughfare for Americans heading west into the new promised land of Kentucky from 1775 to about 1820. In its early days the trip was not for the faint of heart. Boone’s 16-year-old son James was killed in an Indian attack along the route in 1773, his 13-year-old daughter Jemima was captured by Shawnee Indians in 1776 (Boone freed her in a daring rescue two days later), and his brother Ned was killed by Shawnee warriors while hunting with Daniel in 1780. Daniel himself was captured and held prisoner by this same tribe for four months in 1778 before he made his own daring escape.

250th Anniversary Of First Expedition Through The Cumberland Gap

In 2023, to pay tribute to the exploits of Daniel Boone and the 250th Anniversary of his first attempt to establish a settlement in Kentucky in 1773, Cameroon released this fantastic Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) legal tender 1,000 Francs CFA coin that was struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. The coin boasts a fabulous eye-appealing colorized image that shows Boone pointing toward Kentucky. The image is from a painting entitled Boone at Cumberland Gap displayed in the House wing of the Capitol that’s part of a series of paintings depicting depicts America’s westward expansion. The murals in the corridor were designed and painted by EverGreene Painting Studios, Inc., under the direction of principal artist Jeffrey Greene. As an added bonus, each 2023 Cameroon 2000 Francs One-Ounce Silver CFA Daniel Boone Colorized Coin will come with a 1968 U.S. Postage stamp featuring Daniel Boone along with a stone arrowhead.

Extremely Limited Mintage

The NBC television series did get one thing right, however. Fess Parker was seldom seen without his flintlock rifle dubbed “Old Tick-Licker.” The real Daniel gave the durable firearm its name because he said he could use it to shoot a tick off an animal without hurting the beast! Other aspects of the series—like Ed Ames’ portrayal of Daniel’s friend Mingo, an Oxford-educated half-British, half-Cherokee—were complete fiction. What’s NOT fiction is the extremely limited nature of this coin. Just 999 have been authorized for worldwide release, so don’t wait to secure yours!
