Struck in 1911 and designed by Tientsin Mint Chief Engraver Luigi Giorgi, the Silver Dragon Dollar has become one of China’s most famous vintage coins. However, Giorgi also designed a version with the dragon curling in the opposite direction. Known as the “Reverse Dragon,” this Pattern never circulated due to Feudal China’s belief that counterclockwise rotation had negative impacts and represented disrespect towards the emperor. The dragon’s tail partially being wrapped in clouds was also against the monarchical rules. Since then, the “Reverse Dragon” Pattern coin has become an ultra-rare piece coveted by collectors for its rarity and unique rebellious symbolism. An example even sold at auction for $179,250!

To recreate this epic work of art, the mint went to the source and used an original specimen from 1911 to create the dies! Struck in one ounce of highly pure 99.9% silver, it features the same ornate images and markings as the original.

Officially certified as a Restrike, this proof recreates the exact design of the original “Reverse Dragon” Pattern in stunning double-sided high relief without the use of curved fields or a thicker planchet. To produce the stunning high relief on both sides of this proof, the mint developed a special technique to strike this relief on a standard planchet. In fact, several dies were ruined trying to perfect the technique.

The result is breathtaking. Each piece was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. They have also been sonically sealed in an acrylic holder that features a special “Restrike” designation.
