Heat Up Your Collection With The Second Coin In The Ice Age Series
According to a geological stopwatch, the disappearance of the Woolly Mammoth during the late Pleistocene Era occurred almost yesterday. These prehistoric elephants roamed across North America from Nebraska to Northern Canada before they went extinct around 10,000 years ago due to melting glaciers that ruined the vegetation these great hairy beasts subsisted on. These giant creatures may be gone, but they’re not forgotten as you can see here on this, the second release in the Royal Canadian Mint’s Ice Age coin series that shows a Woolly Mammoth rumbling across the North American tundra!
A Dramatic Image Of An Ice Age Giant
The coin shows a Woolly Mammoth with its head held high and massive tusks almost stretching off the edge of the design. The viewing angle makes it appear as if the mammoth were about to trample over you. Imagine if you were a prehistoric hunter armed with only a spear and this big fella came lumbering by! Struck in two full ounces of highly pure 99.99% silver, this Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coin paints just such a scene in exquisite detail. From the mammoth’s long curving trunk to its stomping feet to its shaggy coating, the razor-sharp images are highly detailed and crystal clear!
About The Woolly Mammoth
While Canada’s Woolly Mammoths disappeared towards the end of the last great ice age around 12,000 to 10,000 years ago, their remains are still being unearthed in modern times. As recent as June 2022, a mummified baby mammoth was found in Canada’s Yukon territory with intact hair, skin, and tusks. The mammoth calf was found buried in ancestral land of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin (The People of the River), a First Nations band descended from the Hän-speaking people who have lived along the Yukon River for thousands of years. Tribal elders named the frozen mammoth Nun cho ga, which means “big baby animal” in the Hän language. About the same size as a modern elephant, Woolly Mammoths stood about 10 feet tall and weighed as much as six tons. Scientists believe Woolly Mammoths appeared in North America around 100,000 years ago and lived on cold steppe grasslands close to the glaciers, where they ate tough grasses and sedges.
