Silver Bullion Coins

Silver bullion coins are types of precious metal bullion distinguished by their highly pure precious metal content. Silver bullion coins are minted by government mints and are therefore considered legal tender and usually carry a denomination. While some silver bullion coins may have added premiums, bullion pieces are generally valued for their precious metal content, purity, and weight, making silver bullion coins a straightforward way to own physical silver for investment or wealth preservation. Silver Coins vs. Silver Rounds

While both silver coins and silver rounds contain significant amounts of silver (minimum .909 fine silver) and often look similar, there are key differences between these two types of silver bullion:

  • Silver Bullion Coins: These are official legal-tender coins issued by sovereign governments, usually carrying a nominal face value and government-backed for their precious metal content and purity. For example, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf has a face value of $5 but contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, making its silver content far more valuable than its denomination. These types of silver bullion coins are typically struck in .999 or even .9999 fine silver.

  • Silver Bullion Rounds: While silver rounds are shaped like coins, they are not produced by government mints or considered legal tender. Consequently, silver rounds are valued solely for their precious metal content (minimum .909 fine silver up to .999 fine silver). They can also have unique designs but without government backing. These silver bullion pieces tend to have lower premiums than silver bullion coins, making them a cost-effective way to accumulate more silver for your money.

Both forms are investment-grade bullion, meaning they meet strict purity standards (all GOVMINT silver bullion pieces meet a minimum of .909 fine silver, many of which are .999 pure or higher). Standard weights for modern silver bullion coins range from fractional sizes (1/2 oz or 1/4 oz) to 1 troy oz, with larger options as well: 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and more!

Why Buy Silver Bullion Coins

Silver has unique attributes that have made it a popular choice among investors. Here are some of the primary reasons to invest in silver bullion coins:

Historical Value of Silver as a Precious Metal

For thousands of years, silver has played a critical role in economies worldwide, having been used as currency, for trade, and as a reliable source of wealth preservation. Many investors see silver as a safe-haven asset when other currencies and commodities are negatively affected by economic conditions, such as inflation. Owning silver bullion coins provides a great way for investors to attain a tangible asset that has historically stood the test of time as a possible hedge against economic uncertainty.

Affordability Compared to Gold

Silver is a great entry point for novice investors who may not be ready for the high costs of other precious metals like gold. Silver’s spot price is often a fraction of gold’s spot price per ounce, making silver bullion coins an affordable precious metal for novice and experienced investors alike. This affordability makes it easier to build a sizable precious metal portfolio without a large upfront investment.

Industrial Demand & Liquidity

Aside from its value solely as a precious metal, silver has several modern applications across many industries, such as electronics, solar energy, healthcare, jewelry, and more. When you purchase a silver bullion round or coin, you’re not only obtaining a piece of precious metal but a commodity with practical uses worldwide. As both an investment and an industrial raw material, this dual role helps support silver’s value over time.

Physical Ownership

When investing in stocks or digital assets, it can often feel like you have zero control over the assets you own. Acquiring silver bullion coins brings a level of control for investors as they will retain physical ownership over their assets. Owning a tangible asset can provide peace of mind, especially when financial and economic systems face uncertainty. Silver bullion is also highly liquid, making silver coins an asset that you can easily sell or trade through dealers and private buyers throughout the world. Should you wish to move your silver bullion into a self-directed IRA, however, you’ll need to forfeit direct ownership of your silver and work with an IRS-approved custodian to securely store those assets while included in your IRA.
