2023 Australia $1 1-oz Silver Queensland Coat of Arms BU
Third Release In Australia’s Coat Of Arms Series Pays Tribute To Queensland
Even if you are not a descendent form a noble family, you’re probably familiar with what a coat of arms is. These detailed symbols are used to identify families or individuals with designs that usually include a shield, crest, helmet, motto, and more. Most countries also employ a national coat of arms as part of their great seals. Created with familiar symbols unique to each nation, official coats of arms and are often used as the main symbol on passport covers. Among the most distinctive coats of arms come from Australia where the nation’s unique flora and fauna are put to effective use on the symbols of Australia’s six states. Those native Australian animals have long been the stars of their individual coin series, and now they have joined forces in Australia’s Coat of Arms series of gold and silver coins.
Australian Heraldry Struck in Solid Silver
Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, this coin is the third release in the series and makes a marvelous addition to The Royal Australian Mint’s legacy of numismatic perfection. The 2023 coin’s reverse deign is based on the Queensland Coat of Arms, Australia’s oldest, and depicts a brolga (a crane native to Australia), plus smaller images of cattle, sheep, wheat, and gold to symbolize the colony’s great wealth. The coin’s obverse shows a rampant stag and a small inset of Queen Elizabeth II. While the stag is not native to Australia, it exists in heraldry as a symbol of the nation’s connection to Great Britain. After Queen Victoria granted Queensland’s Coat of Arms in 1893, she gifted the colony with a heard of deer from the Royal Hunting grounds. An inscription on the coin reads, “AUDAX AT FIDELIS,” the state motto of Queensland which means “Bold but Faithful.”
