The Most Venomous Marine Animal In The Ocean

You wouldn’t know it from looking at it, but Australia’s Box Jellyfish is the most venomous marine animal in the ocean. Just one sting from this little beastie could be enough to not only ruin your vacation snorkeling about the Great Barrier Reef, but it could send you to a watery grave! With a toxin that attacks the heart, nervous system, and skin cells, the sting of a Box Jellyfish has been described as being so overpoweringly painful that it’s been known to cause cardiac arrest, paralysis, or death in just a few minutes, meaning if you’re stung by one of these creatures you might die before you even reach shore! Survivors often experience excruciating pain for weeks and are often left with significant scarring where the tentacles made contact.

Though beautiful to look at, the Box Jellyfish rightfully owns a loathsome reputation that places it high among the list of Australia’s most dangerous creatures. That reputation has also earned it a spot in the Royal Australian Mint’s Most Dangerous Series as the fourth release in the coin program.

Australia’s Venomous Box Jellyfish In Its ocean Environment

This legal-tender $1 coin is oozing with menace as a smack of Box Jellyfish bob their way across its surface. The design shows the little invertebrates in their ocean environment with their long tentacles streaming around like venomous needles ready to strike. Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, the coin literally glimmers thanks to its original Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition that features razor sharp details that are fresh, crisp, and clean.

Australia’s Box Jellyfish are pale blue “sea wasps” that are transparent in color. They get their name from the cube-like shape of their bell from which grow as many as 15 tentacles, each extending up to 10 feet in length with about 5,000 stinging cells. They are a highly advanced species of jellyfish—which is a weird thing to say since they have no central nervous system—having developed the ability to move rather than just drift, cruising around the ocean at speeds of up to four knots, or roughly 5 miles per hour. We don’t know about you but that’s pretty fast when you consider that the average swimmer churns away at around 2 miles per hour! Clearly, the only place you’ll want to see this deadly creature is in your coin collection!
