Hailed as the birthplace of coins, Ionia has a history that dates back to the 18th century B.C. The Ionian state didn’t come into existence until the 7th and 6th centuries B.C. when it was league of Greek settlements located in ancient Anatolia in what is the western coast of present-day Turkey. In his writings, the ancient author Herodotus described the Ionians as being the first people to use coinage. The earliest of these coins were made from electrum, a precious metal composed primarily of gold and silver and often found in riverbeds. Also known as “white gold,” electrum was harder and more durable than pure gold and worked very well for coinage at a time when technology did not exist for separating metals or perfecting minting techniques.
