Coins Of Cleopatra, One Of The Most Powerful Woman To Ever Walk The Earth
Cleopatra, the Queen of the Nile and the last ruler of Egypt’s Ptolemaic Kingdom before giving way to Roman conquest in 30 B.C. One of the most iconic women in world history, Cleopatra has been portrayed on film by such legendary actresses as Theda Bara, Claudette Colbert, Vivien Leigh, and, most famously, Elizabeth Taylor. Renowned for her beauty, Cleopatra was even more respected for her intelligence. Her skills in math, philosophy and astronomy combined with shrewd political instincts allowed her to reign for 21 years as arguably the most powerful woman in the world during her lifetime. Here you can secure a coin struck during her reign!
Minted By Hand More Than 2,000 Years Ago!
This ancient tetradrachm was minted by hand in approximately 14 grams of silver sometime between 51 and 30 B.C during the reign of Cleopatra VII—yes, there were other queen named Cleopatra before her—and features the diademed head of Ptolemy I, the first ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom named after him. His bust also features an aegis, a “magical” breastplate or garment that was emblematic of majesty. In Greek imagery, Alexander the Great is often depicted wearing an aegis. And, since Ptolemy I was a general in Alexander the Great’s army before founding the Ptolemaic dynasty, it was only natural for coins that bore his image would show him wearing an aegis.
The coin’s reverse features an eagle with closed wings standing left on a thunderbolt along with the headdress of Isis, a major goddess in ancient Egyptian religion. During her reign in Egypt, Cleopatra—who was predominantly of Macedonian Greek ancestry—strongly connected herself to the Egyptian goddess Isis. This served to legitimize her rule and to connect her with the native religion of her people.
