AD 1000–1400 Coins of the Middle Ages 8-pc Set
Coins That Shine A Light On Europe’s Dark Ages
Even before Rome fell to barbarian invaders in AD 476, the Empire had been gradually descending into chaos for decades, buffeted by constant invasions and a string of weak and ineffective leaders. Along with the political collapse, the economic disaster wrought by the Fall of the Roman Empire sent Europe spiraling into a prolonged period of stagnation known as “The Dark Ages.”
Coins That Picked Up The Pieces Of The Roman Empire
During this time, silver currency became progressively more diluted, and the relative absence of Roman minting left a vacuum in the world of commerce. In response, various city states and strongholds took to minting their own coins to fill the void. As time went by, a nearly standardized form of silver coinage took hold, rejuvenating trade with standardized weights from Delhi to Vienna. This historic collection features eight silver and billon coins from the Middle Ages during a time when Europe was picking up the pieces left behind by the shattered remains of the Roman Empire. The coins include:
- 1039–1125 Tuscany, Lucca, denar
- 1121–1269 Almohad Dynasty, Spain, denar
- 1131–1141 Hungary, Bela II, denar
- 12th–13th Centuries, Byzantine Empire, trachy
- 13th Century, Crusader States, denar tournois
- 13th Century, Swabia, Germany, heller
- 1301 – 1342, Armenia, Cilicia, takvorin
- 14th Century, Republic of Venice, torneselllo
Genuine Authentic Coins From The Middle Ages
These coins are all in circulated condition, and since they are all silver/billon coins, the wear does show on the coins. However, those signs of wear confirm two things. One, these coins are genuinely silver—earlier Roman coins were struck in bronze, and the diluted metal content made them more resistant to wear. Real silver coins also had to avoid melting over the centuries, and it’s amazing that these coins exist today. Finally, the wear indicates that these coins saw use, and it’s an interesting exercise to think about who may have held these coins and what they purchased all those centuries ago.
Each coin will come protected in an acrylic holder and the entire set will come beautifully housed in a wood presentation box and accompanied by a storycard and a Certificate of Authenticity.
