Complete 1776–1976 Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar Set
When the Eisenhower Dollar was first introduced, it featured a stunning reverse inspired by the Apollo 11 mission patch—an American Bald Eagle landing on the surface of the moon. But in 1976, that design was changed to pay tribute to the nation’s Bicentennial. Instead of the majestic eagle, the design featured the Liberty Bell on the reverse. The moon was still there, though, tucked behind the bell. The design was the result of a contest held for a one-time-only reverse design. The new design was created by 22-year-old art student Dennis Williams. At the time, Williams was the youngest person to ever design a U.S. coin!
Ike Dollars Celebrate America’s 200th Birthday
The United States Mint struck the Eisenhower Dollar in 40% silver from 1971 to 1974 before switching to a clad composition. But before the series came to an abrupt end in 1978, special Bicentennial Ike Dollars were minted in 1975 and 1976—all with the 1776–1976 dual date to mark the nation’s 200th Birthday. All told, there were eight different collector’s editions of the 1776-1976 Eisenhower Bicentennial Dollar—and that’s what you have here! The eight coins include Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) and Proof versions from three different mints: Philadelphia (P), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). Here’s what you’ll get:
- 1776–1976-P Eisenhower Dollar Type I BU
- 1776–1976-P Eisenhower Dollar Type II BU
- 1776–1976-D Eisenhower Dollar Type I BU
- 1776–1976-D Eisenhower Dollar Type II BU
- 1776–1976-S Eisenhower Dollar Type I Proof Clad
- 1776–1976-S Eisenhower Dollar Type II Proof Clad
- 1776–1976-S Eisenhower Dollar 40% Silver BU
- 1776–1976-S Eisenhower Dollar 40% Silver Proof
All Three Mint Marks And Both Type I And Type II Versions!
This set brings together all three mint marks—the standard uncirculated versions from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, and the shining Proof versions from the San Francisco Mint—coins that were only available in official Proof Sets and the hardest to find of the three versions. The difference between the Type I and Type II coins refers to the style of the reverse lettering. Each set will also come beautifully housed in a deluxe presentation case.
