1953–2003 New York City Transit Token 7-pc Set
Can You Feel the Hustle and Bustle?
The New York City Subway System opened in 1904 and the Turn-of-the-Century fare was 5 cents. A few years later the fare was raised to 10 cents. In 1953, the fare not only rose to 15 cents, but also saw was the year the first transit tokens came out. For the next 50 years the subway token was a way of life for New Yorkers. Tokens were changed from time to time, due to fare increases as well as technology that made counterfeiting easier. Then in 2003 came the MetroCard. No more tokens. This set features seven different New York City Transit tokens struck during the 50-year period between 1953 and 2003.
