1951 Bulgaria 3–200 Leva Paper Currency 7-pc Set Unc
Bulgarian Paper Currency From The Height Of The Cold War
These Communist-era Bulgarian National Bank notes were issued in 1951 during the height of the Cold War and barely lasted a decade until they were withdrawn from circulation in 1962. Each is really a miniature work of art with vignettes that include hands holding a hammer and sickle, an ancient Russian made tractor plowing the fields, workers laying railroad track, a peasant woman with baskets of roses, peasants harvesting tobacco, and more.
The Bravest Man In Germany
Several of the notes feature the portrait of Georgi Dimitrov, a communist politician based in Berlin when the Nazis came to power. Dimitrov won world-renown and respect for his calm conduct while defending himself against his Nazi accusers, primarily Hermann Göring, the second most powerful man in Germany behind only Adolf Hitler. Falsely accused of setting fire to the Reichstag, he conducted himself so well that the saying “There is only one brave man in Germany, and he is a Bulgarian!” spread across Europe. Though acquitted, Dimitrov was expelled to the Soviet Union. He returned to Bulgaria in 1946 as the nation’s first Communist leader, serving as Prime Minister from 1946 to 1949.
