One Of The Most Famous And Prolific Coin Designers In U.S. Mint History
More than a century ago, the half dollar that lined people’s pockets was the Barber Half Dollar. The Barber Half Dollar is a classic American design. The series is named for its designer, Charles E. Barber, who served as the sixth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. Barber is one of the most famous and prolific coin designers in U.S. Mint history, having designed a full range of circulating coinage in his day.
Barber’s Iconic Half-Dollar Design
The obverse features a bust of Liberty, facing right and wearing a wreath of laurel with a band inscribed LIBERTY in her hair. The inscription IN GOD WE TRUST appears above, and the date below. Thirteen stars are present, arranged six to the left and seven to the right, along with the designer’s initial “B”. The reverse is based on the Great Seal of the United States and portrays an eagle with wings spread holding an olive branch and three arrows.
